Foodie Friday {Guacamole & White Sangria}…

Have you missed Foodie Fridays?

I have missed cooking.  We decided to forgo the grocery store this week and use up what we had in the refrigerator and pantry.  It is Friday and I am going a little crazy.  I like planned menus and planned meals.  This “use what we have” nonsense is better left for those fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants kinda person.  And that ain’t me. 😉

Summer is drawing to a close {I hope sooner rather than later}, but if you want to get more out of those tomatoes and veggies…


  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 small tomato, diced
  • 1 jalapeno, diced
  • 1-2 Tbsp cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 lime, juiced
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • salt & pepper
  1. Mash avocado in a bowl.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and stir.
  3. Season with salt & pepper.
  4. Serve immediately.


  • 1 bottle white wine (I prefer Sauv Blanc)
  • 1/2 bottle Sprite or Sierra Mist (don’t get the Diet version)
  • 1-2 lemons, sliced
  • 1-2 limes, sliced
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Watermelon
  • Peaches
  • Pineapple (canned or fresh)
  1. Mix all ingredients together in a pitcher.
  2. Serve chilled.

You can mix and match the fruit.  I add whatever is in the refrigerator.  The more the merrier.  Cheers! 🙂

168 Hours…

We’ve all heard that time is the ultimate commodity.  Time is precious.  Time is valuable.  Time is currency.  Don’t waste it.  Spend it wisely.

We all say things like this:

  • “It’s already Friday?  Where did the week go?”
  • “I cannot believe September is two days away.  January feels like it was yesterday!”

Time seems to slip past us without us understanding what happened to it.  It is a nonrenewable resource.  It’s not like money.  You run out of money then you go get more of it.  You run out of time, and you are out of the game.

We are all “busy” 24/7/365.  We work 60+ hour work weeks.  We sleep less than 5 hours a night.  We don’t have time to exercise or cook or read or …

But are we really that busy?  Do we know how to spend our time?

Some people spend their time better than others.  Take my friend Kristin for example.  She finds time to hang with friends, study for grad school, play tennis, sip coffee, and go for hikes.  Every day.  I’m a little green with envy.  Does she ever sleep?  I’m sure she does, and a good solid 7 hours.

The truth is we all have the same amount of time in our day and week.  168 hours in the week to be exact.

Another truth — we all have the ability to choose.  Choose how to spend our precious time. Who to spend it with.  What to spend it on.

I found myself saying this phrase over and over yesterday, “Time to trim the fat.  Cut the deadweight.”  My schedule and, thus my life, is becoming too full.  Too full of should haves, could haves, what ifs, and anxiety.  I’m feeling lost and anxious at the end of the day.  Where did the time go?  Did I accomplish anything?  What about everything I have left to do?  Did I make the most out of that networking event?  Did I spend enough time with Raymond?  Did I eat a balanced dinner?  Did I drink enough water?

It’s time to trim the fat.  Time to streamline.  Responsibilities, commitments, to-do lists, and guilt.

I’m taking a challenge presented in a book that arrived in my mailbox yesterday: 168 Hours, You Have More Time Than You Think.

Out Junkin…

I realize that antique shopping … picking … hunting … however you want to refer to it is not a new hobby or concept.  However, I realize it is new to me! 🙂  I am a “less is more” kind of person when it comes to stuff in my house and life, but I am starting to appreciate items with history (like antiques).

Another trend I am noticing … clients are asking for organizing pieces with character and design aspects.  That $15 corkboard from Target doesn’t cut it anymore.  Something pretty and functional is what people are asking demanding for!

I started my antique hunting a few weeks back.  I have some items I’m selling for a client and I needed to figure out what they were.  Sleepy Poet Antique Mall I went.  The rest is history — I’m hooked!

The place is pretty large with tons of dealers.  Think of it as a Black Lion for antiques … and a lot more stuff.  I have not had a chance to go and quietly stroll.  Must.Go.Back.

This place rocks my world.  It is an old mill turned antique mall.  Same concept as Sleepy Poet except is more spread out (aka more room to gently stroll).  I’m so glad I had my camera.  The inspirational ideas were endless!

How Was Your Weekend?

I’ll confess, it is hard to keep up with my blogging when business gets a little busy.  I spent the past few weeks writing blog posts on Sunday until I realized I needed to disconnect on the weekend to keep my energy for the rest of the week.

With that said … how was your weekend?  What did you do?  I would love to hear about it!  🙂

I started the weekend with a trip to the Southern Ideal Home Show.  I had never attended and managed to get a few tickets, so I took my mom.  Whom I haven’t seen since July 4th! I met the ladies from Front Door Fabrics.  They had a great booth.  Very well designed.

I also met Cari Cucksey from the HGTV Show “Cash & Cari”.  I was SO excited to meet her … we even became Twitter friends.

Raymond and I drove down to Filbert, SC yesterday.  He wanted to buy peaches and tomatoes before the end of the season.  The Peach Tree had about 5 peaches left … it is apple season now apparently.

It was a great afternoon and we had a fun adventure.  If you follow me on Instagram, then you saw some of these pictures.

Networking Like It’s Your Job…

The word “networking” has such a bad connotation.  I know networking is important, but just hearing the word wears me out.

Networking can wear me out … if I network too much or too hard.

I think we all know life is … like a box of chocolates?  No that’s not where I was going with this.

Life is “all in who you know”.  And networking helps extend that “who you know” circle.

So who should be networking and maintaining a network?  Everyone.

I’m not just talking about business networking here.  It takes work to maintain friendships, even family relationships.  But it is worth it.  These are the people you can count on and lean on and have fun with!

Another way to maintain a network is local groups with similar interests and hobbies.  Meetup is a great way to find out about local moms groups, running groups, cycling, art, jazz, diy-ers, you name it.

Lastly, be sure to maintain an online network.  Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are all great ways to stay connected and, better yet, feel connected with others even when you can’t make every social outing of the year.

Keep Your Important Papers Safe…

What is considered “important”?

  • Copies of
    • Driver’s License
    • Passport
    • Birth Certificate
    • Death Certificate(s)
    • Marriage certificates
    • Adoption papers
    • Bank & Brokerage Accounts
      • Debit and credit cards (copy of each side)
      • Copy of a check for each account
      • One bank statement (issued within the past year)
    • Home
      • Deed
      • Mortgage agreement
      • Home-equity loan agreements
      • Photos
    • Tax returns (past 3 years)
    • Wills, trusts, and power of attorney documents
    • Names & contact information for all executors, trustees, guardians, and financial advisers.
    • Insurance policies and agent contact information
    • List of user IDAs and passwords for all online financial accounts
    • List of assets and liabilities

We spend a lot of time and money preparing ourselves and family for “the one day”.  Life insurance policies, wills, burial plots.  All that work can go down the drain if trusted relatives cannot find it when the day comes.

Take the time to pull this information together.  It is your responsibility after all — no one else.

I recommend sending the copies to a trusted relative, friend, or to someone who has legal responsibility to act on your behalf.  Keep copies for yourself.  Place in a red folder marked “Important”.  And as one last backup, place a copy in a firesafe box and/or safe deposit box.  Update the files every 2-3 years.

Captain Gus…

I recently met Captain Gus at an event on Lake Norman.  He was talking about the Sights & Sounds of Lake Norman.  I found him fascinating and entertaining!

What I got from the presentation:  Gus lives in the lake everyday.  Did I say “in” the lake?  I meant on the lake.  😉 He runs a fishing operation that teaches individuals how to fish and where to find them.

I am not a fisher — I went about three times with my best friend, Lauren, and her dad.  I think I caught one fish.  It was the size of my hand.  I would starve to death if fishing was lifeline.

The reality is I live in an apartment that makes entertaining tons of guests rather difficult.  The only time I ever wish I owned a home is when I get the desire to entertain … and to decorate for the holidays.

I will live vicariously through you — tell me about your summer shindigs. 🙂

Shake Up Your Routine…

Webster defines routine as…

routine:  a regular course of procedure; habitual or mechanical performance of an established procedure

We tend to be creatures of habit.  Routines are safe.  They are easy.  They help us save time.

They also allow us to slip through life without being present.  We go through the motions.  Mindless.

Routines can get us in a rut.  We wake up one day and say “Where did my life go?”  Day in and day out spent driving to the same place to work, taking care of the kids and the husband, runnings the errands, and planning the meal.  All this to get us where?

I’m not saying that you should quit your job to go find yourself.  I’m simply saying you should shake up your routine.  Get out of that comfort zone.

  1. Make a new friend.
    • As we get older, it becomes harder and harder to find and make new friends.  It was much easier when we were in school and college.
    • Don’t be afraid to say yes to party and event invitations, even if it means you will go alone.
    • Going alone will be even better for your routine!  There is no crutch to lean on.  You have to make new friends!
    • Don’t wait for someone else to make the initiative.  Start a book club with friends.  Or a potluck dinner night once a month.
    • Our schedules are packed, but usually with boring mindless errands and tasks.  Make time for you …. and your new friends! 🙂
  2. Try a new hobby.
    • Skydiving.
    • Salsa dancing.
    • Scrapbooking.
    • Photography.
    • Anything can be considered a hobby.
    • And anything is worth trying at least once.
  3. Pursue your passion (turn it into a second career).
    • What is your passion?
    • You can have one.  It’s okay {I give you permission}. 😉
    • If you don’t have one — go find one.
    • Just because you picked a career when you were in your 20’s doesn’t mean you have to stick with it until retirement.
    • Make your life worthwhile.  Do something worthwhile.
    • Take baby steps. No one said it had to be a drastic change.
  4. Upgrade your style.
    • Fresh haircut.
    • New accessories.
    • Ask some of your stylish friends for advice.
    • Look to Pinterest for ideas.
    • It will make you feel like a million dollars!

Foodie Friday {Avocado, Tomato, Mozzarella Salad}

This is a great addition to any dinner menu.  I particularly like it in the summer because it is fresh and light.

Avocado, Tomato, Mozzarella Salad

  • (2) avocados, ripe
  • (2) tomatoes
  • Ball fresh mozzarella
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 Tsp basil (fresh is better than dried)
  • Salt & Pepper
  1. Cube avocados, tomatoes, and mozzarella.
  2. Place all ingredients in large serving bowl.
  3. Mix lightly.
  4. Serve immediately.

Note: This is best day of.  It can be a little slimy next day.
