Organizing Closets With A Growing Family {Reveal}

If you have children, then you probably remember the stress that came over you when your first child was due in just a few short months.  My guess is (since I don’t have any little ones) that preparing for the first child is the hardest.

I started several closet projects a few weeks ago with a growing family (baby is due in June).  Our focus was the master bedroom closet, baby’s closet, guest room closet, and linen closet.  We talked about other areas that could use some organizing but our time was focused on the above areas.

Let’s start with the nursery closet shall we.  It looked like this:

Nursery Closet Before | Pure & Simple

Why yes that is a lot of “stuff”.  The closet had been used to store everything from paint to scuba gear to the wedding dress.  We donated items, moved some tools to another location that made more sense, and transferred extra storage items to the guest room closet.  We needed to make way for baby after all.

The family intends to use the closet for clothes and toy storage.  Children’s clothes are so small that is it is more effective to use the closet space for several categories.  And the after:

Nursery Closet After| Pure & Simple

Now the guest bedroom closet.

Guest Closet Before | Pure & Simple

A theme is starting to form here.  Lots ‘o stuff.  This closet was mainly packed with clothes and blankets.  There were many, many bags of donations that came from this closet.  Their goal was to make this a functioning guest closet for when their parents visit and to store items from the nursery closet.

Guest Closet After | Pure & Simple

Much better!  The top shelf is used for “Memory Lane” items such as photo albums and the like.

The master bedroom closet was rather interesting.  When they opened the doors during the consultation, I said “Where are all the clothes?”  They were living out of laundry baskets instead of using the closet.  Clean clothes were left in the laundry basket and items were retrieved from there.  The closet required an initial “setup” to function so they could finish the last part of that chore:  hang up clothes.

We used a few fun organizing options for scarves, jewelry, and ties.

Organizing Closet Accessories | Pure & Simple

Shadow boxes are my favorite way to organize and display jewelry.  I’ve blogged about my love for shadow boxes here.  The best options can be purchased at Home Goods or TJ Maxx.

We used the Walnut Tie Spinner to store the men’s ties.  This was my first time using a tie organizer; I was very impressed!

I’m always searching for ways to better organize scarves. The Real Simple Scarf & Belt Organizer worked great in this closet.  The scarves were fairly compact so we hung them in the back of the closet.  Easy to get to but out of the way.

Be sure to check out the Facebook page for more pictures of the linen closet and insta-pantry!

What are your organizing recommendations for the parents-to-be?

Master Bedroom Closet Organizing {Reveal}…

I wrapped a large closet project last week and wanted to share the progress with you all!

The closet is a very large walk-in big enough for him and her.  “His” side was pretty well organized; “her” side was overrun with clothes and shoes.

We spent many days sorting the clothes into similar piles.  Sweaters.  Dresses. Jeans.  Short sleeve shirts.

After the piles were created, we started to purge.  Things that didn’t fit or were no longer “loved” went in the donation pile.

After several rounds of purging and sorting, the donations were hauled off and the clothes made their way back into the closet.  We used several organizing “tools” for the project.  The biggest challenge was containing all wallets, clutches, and purses.  Organizing the accessories tends to be the fun part! 🙂

Charlotte Today Appearance…

I intended to post about my recent girl’s trip to Blowing Rock.  We had a blast.  Tons of great pictures and great quotes.  Only to realize that I left my camera at my parent’s house. *wonk*wonk* :/

In the meantime….

Jennifer on WCNC Set

I will post about the Charlotte Today appearance.  😀

I’ve been the nervous type for years … as long as I can remember.  However, I seem to be doing better with my anxious nerves.  I tell myself “Nothing To Do It, But To Do It‘ and “People aren’t scary”  {that last one was borrowed from my mentor Angie} 🙂

Well, my anxious nerves were acting up last Monday.  I didn’t sleep well … at all!  I dreamt I was at the wrong news station.  I dreamt they told me to go home because I was so awful.

Wonderful dreams to start the day.  Then I wake up and it is pouring down rain!  I don’t know many girls who get excited about a rainy soggy day when they need to be dressed to the nines.

So I get ready, gather my props, and head out the door with Raymond in tow.  Traffic was jacked up thanks to above mentioned rain.  We took some detours and arrived with time to spare.  Time to shine … except I had an hour and half to kill.  Cue anxious nervous.

Raymond and I set up the props table and I walked around rehearsing my “lines”.

I hold my hands like that when I get nervous. :)

Someone walked up and mentioned that President Obama had a scheduled press conference for 11:30.  That would be 5 minutes before I was set to appear.  Awesome.

So the show started.  Raymond and I watched from the Peanut Gallery.  I shot my “teaser” and then the President tuned in.  Good gracious!  So we taped the segment and I tried to smile and have as much fun as possible.  I think it went pretty well!  Do you? 🙂

Having fun on set!

{The Hosiery Hanger}…

Do you wear hose?  I just started wearing them again and I kinda like it!  I think it is because I adore Kate Middleton and her style.  A staple of that style is dresses plus hose.

I never know how to store my hose.  I currently have them balled up and rolled up in the back of my sock drawer.  Probably not the best way to take care of the stockings. 😉

The Hosiery Hanger Logo

I ran across The Hosiery Hanger a few months back and thought it would be a great way to organize my … scarves. 🙂  Can you tell I’m thinking about switching it over to my hose collection?

“The Hosiery Hanger works brilliantly for tights, leggings, scarves, and whatever else you can think of!”

Like I said … I thought scarves. 🙂

When you move, you quickly realize that worked at your previous residence won’t work at your new.  I stored my scarves in an over the door shoe organizer and loved it!  I didn’t have the wall or door space to do that at the current apartment so I was stuck with this:

Unorganized Scarves {Before}

Unorganized Scarves {Before}

Awful I know!  Not to mention I prefer to have scarves and gloves in the coat closet … not my clothes closet.  So enter The Hosiery Hanger!

The Hosiery Hanger

The Hosiery Hanger

The instructions were pretty simple.

  1. Loop through the elastic.
  2. Pull through elastic just a little.
  3. Voila! Snag free and organized!

I like instructions like that! 🙂  What do you think?

Hosiery Hanger {In Action}

Hosiery Hanger {In Action}

I’m actually using two hangers.  One for scarves and one for gloves.  The elastic is strong enough to keep them hanging and steady.  It is a great fix for my outerwear problem — but I’m still thinking I need another one for my pantyhose! 🙂

Did I mention it would be a great way to organize your bras (sorry fellas)! 😉

How do you organize your outerwear? 🙂

Until next time…

Goodwill & a Giveaway…

Goodwill LogoHappy Holidays to YOU! 🙂  I’m hosting a giveaway — my first ever. 🙂  Be sure to participate — you could win a present for yourself.  $50 Goodwill Gift Card! 🙂

I cannot say enough good things about Goodwill.  I’m hooked on shopping.  I’m hooked on donating.  I’m hooked on them. 😉

Why I Donate

I donate because it is easy.  There are so many stores sprinkled all through the area which makes donating a breeze.  When I leave a client’s home with a car full of donations I can easily swing by a store to drop them off.  There seems to be a store located in every major part of the county.  Gotta love that!

And those electronics?  Safely donate to Goodwill — all of them!  They will resell what they can (cords, monitors, speakers), donate what they can’t (non-working printer).  They also crush every hard drive for you if donating a laptop or computer!

I donate because it helps support a great charity and cause.  When you are deciding what to do with all that “stuff” you no longer want or need, consider donating.  Donating is easier than holding on to it — easier than making plans to give it to a friend or relative — easier than trying to sell every piece.  Make it easier on yourself by donating knowing that your donations are helping this charity in all they do.  And that is?  Helping individuals get back on their feet with job training and support. 🙂

Why I Shop

I shop because you never know what you might find.  I have been donating to Goodwill for years.  However, I just recently stepped into a store to shop a few months ago.  I am hooked.  I visit different Goodwill stores about three times a week.

Brands I have found:  Brooks Brothers, Ralph by Ralph Lauren, Citizens of Humanity, JBrand Jeans, 7 for All Mankind.  I love looking put together without the pain of spending a lot of money. 😉

I shop because I can decorate my apartment on a shoestring budget but still have it look fabulous.  We decorated for fall using several Goodwill finds.  Candle holders.  Pie plates.  Pictures.  Frames.  You do have to think out of the box, but you can find some amazing deals!  How about my crystal sleigh for $1.99?! 🙂

I shop because I love the thrill of the hunt.  There is nothing more exciting than a great find at a great price!  Okay maybe there are things more exciting, but on a day-to-day basis, this works for me. 🙂  I love walking into a store and not knowing what I might come home with! 🙂

Do you love Goodwill as much as I do? 🙂

{Pouchee} The Ultimate Purse Organizer…

Are you a purse person?  I’m not.  I’m picky about everything and purses are no exception.  I prefer a one shoulder satchel style.  I don’t have time to switch out my purses every day based on what I’m wearing.  I also hate the abyss that is the bottom of a purse.  I lose everything!  Well if you are nodding your head in agreement … then enter Pouchee, the ultimate purse organizer.

Pouchee is specifically designed to fit inside handbags to make women’s lives easier and more organized.

Sign me up!  You said my favorite word, “organized”!

Pouchee Purse Organizer
Teal Cotton

My purse is slightly boring.  Raymond calls it my “Giddy Up Sally” purse.  😉  The inside is nothing to marvel at either.

Giddy Up Sally Purse.
Should it be slung over my horse as I ride into town? 😉

Messy interior.
No this shot was not staged. I grabbed my camera, opened the purse, “click”. 🙂

Contents of my purse.
I like to keep things contained hence the miniature pouches.

I think it is safe to say I could use a better system for organizing my purse.  Well what do you think of this?  *Bam!*

The Pouchee In Action!

I’m slightly obsessed with this product.  It is adorable and very well made!  I think I have shown it to every lady friend I have come in contact with.  I keep showing it to Raymond as well. I’m not sure he is quite as excited as I. 😉 *Pppsshh* What does he know about organizing a purse! 😉

I actually threw out the zippered pouches that held my lipgloss, floss, mirror, tylenol, etc.  Don’t need it.  Got rid of it.  Sold on the teal Pouchee! 🙂
Here are some deets:

  • Available at over 1,600 stores & www.pouchee.com

{Stuck On You} Organizing Planners…

A few months ago I came across an ad in a local publication about Stuck On You Labels.  I went to their website to check out their products, and wrote a blog post about their adorable kid’s clothes labels.

Not too long after that I received a shipment from Stuck On You full of goodies! 🙂  All personalized nonetheless!

Love the personalized stationary!

I love the Daily To-Do List!  I’m an old fashion kinda gal and still like to write out my To-Do list with pen and paper.  The design and quality of the paper feel much more substantial than the typical lined notebook paper.  Not to mention, if it is pretty then I am more likely to use it and stick with it.

Look at those lists! So pretty & organized!

The Weekly Planner is where I am recording the time log for my 168 Hours Project.  The printable calendar from 168 Hours website would have worked fine, but again, I like the design and quality of the paper.  I’m a bit of a paper snob; just ask the guy at Office Depot.  He was more than attune to the fact that I had to have THICK paper for my blog planner. 😛

I plan to fill that bad boy up!

The Shopping Planner is used for my list of errands.  See the thing is — without a list I will forget everything.  I leave nothing to memory — I write everything down.  I recently used the Shopping Planner to map out my errands while shopping for decoration ideas.  I pulled out the trusty Holiday Binder to grab some inspiration.

The Holiday Binder got a makeover. 🙂
Love that Shopping Planner!

I have a different method for grocery shopping which is what the Shopping Planner is intended for.  If I wrote out my grocery lists, then I would definitely turn to this planner. 😉

Great planner for keeping track of your shopping and errands list

Now about the sports bag.  I.LOVE.IT!  The size is what had me sold.  There are days when I need to cart around enough stuff that it won’t fit in my purse but it’s too small a load for an overnight bag.  Enter Sports Bag.  And I love the owls! 😉  You can choose whichever design you prefer.  I have an affinity towards birds. 😉

Sports Kid’s Bag

So … the kitchen labels are awesome!  They are SO cute that I cannot wait to put them on my flour, sugar, and what-not jars.  However, they are still in the package on the kitchen counter. :/ *wonk*wonk*  I like things to be clean and fresh before changing or adding to the design.  I would like to wash the containers before adhering said adorable labels.  🙂

Be sure to check out their selection of Christmas goodies as well!  If I was a gift giver, I would definitely buy a few of these goodies. 🙂

Until next time…
