Foodie Friday {Food Truck Friday}…

If you live in Charlotte and love Food Trucks, then I highly recommend checking out Food Truck Fridays!

Food Truck Friday | Charlotte

The trucks start serving food around 6pm every Friday in the SouthEnd district of Charlotte.  They set up in the vacant lot across the street from Phat Burrito.

1616 Camden Rd, Charlotte, NC

There is not a lot of information to be found online about the event.  I did stumble across this Facebook Page.

Food Truck Friday Tips | Pure & Simple

Some tips before going:

  • Parking can be tricky.  Street parking and certain lots are open for the event.
  • Bring a chair and blanket.  Seating is hard to come by.
  • Get there early.  Trucks run out of food as the night goes on.
  • BYOB or stop by Common Market for a 6 pack.  The trucks only sell bottled or canned waters and sodas.
  • Bring a frisbee or softball to throw.  If you want to hang out afterwards, then bring something active that you and a friend can do.
  • Bring your dog.  Only if fluffy likes to be around a lot of people.  Don’t forget her water bowl and leash.

Food Truck Friday | The Herban Legend

My main course was the Shawarma from The Herban Legend.  It was a very tasty wrap!  I would recommend adding a side dish.  It is relatively small.

The owner mentioned that he gets inspiration for new dishes from his world travels.  This  wrap did not disappoint.

I’m a bit of a tabbouleh snob and was concerned this would not be fresh.  It mixed very well within the wrap and was indeed made that day!

Amanda tried the Blackened Fish Tacos from Roaming Fork.  Her meal came with a side of parmesan truffle fries, of which I had one or two.  They were delicious and would compliment any main dish.

We also shared a side of Fried Pimento Cheese Balls from Roaming Fork.  They were spectacular!  Crispy, gooey, and flavorful.

For dessert, we shared the Carrot Pineapple Cupcake from Cupcake Delirium.  It was pretty darn good.  I’m glad we shared it; I was stuffed!

With the weather warming up, I would highly recommend heading out to Food Truck Friday to end a long week and welcome a fun weekend!

Foodie Friday {BRAVO! Cucina Italiana}…

I had several Girl’s Nights planned this week so my menu planning was pretty sparse.  Raymond had a Guy’s Night planned with his brother and dad on Tuesday, which left us to one day of enjoying dinner together.

We cooked dinners that I have blogged about before which leads me to, “Nothing new here.”

BRAVO! Cucina ItalianaSo I thought I would blog about Bravo!’s Happy Hour menu.

Bravo! Cucina Italiana is located at Northlake Mall.  I have never been to this restaurant and had no idea it was Italian food.  The full name had escaped my attention.

A few weeks ago a friend invited me to Bravo! for an after work get together.  She said they had Happy Hour specials.  Count me in!

I wasn’t really sure what to expect as I’m not a big fan of Italian food.  Shocking, I know.  😉

Let’s just say … this place is awesome!

The Happy Hour specials are available Monday – Friday, 3-7pm & 9pm-close.

They have appetizers available for $3.95 and several drink options for $5.

BRAVO! Drink Menu BRAVO Bar Menu

I’ve been twice and each time ordered the same thing … well almost.  Raymond is so mad that I haven’t taken him yet. 😉 Maybe next week.

What I’ve tried:

  • Shrimp Fra Diavolo w/Crispy Eggplant
    • Famous Fra Diavolo sauce, topped with green onions and pesto bread crumbs
    • Pretty good but fairly saucy
  • Crispy Shrimp Napoli
    • Fried shrimp with green onions and our lemon butter, charred tomato Napoli sauce
    • My FAVORITE dish!
  • Caprese Salad
    • A classic with marinated tomatoes, fresh Mozzarella, basil and a field greens salad
    • Very good — the mozzarella was definitely fresh
  • Portbello & Boursin Bruschetta
    • Topped with melted Provolone, carmelized onions, crushed red pepper, tomatoes and Boursin
    • 2nd FAVORITE dish!

I might order the BRAVO! Burger when I go with Raymond. 🙂

They offer a variety of martinis, sangria, and other mixed drinks for $5 as well.  The White Peach Sangria was a little too sweet, but the Lemon Basil Martini was delicious!

So if you ever want to try out the restaurant and need a date — call me! 😉

How Was Your Weekend?

What a weekend!  If you lived in or near the Charlotte area, then you know what I’m talking about! 🙂

NOTE: Besides a recap of the weekend, this post will be a slight phone dump of pictures I took each day.  My new love Instagram did not disappoint. 😉

Cody & I went for a quick run to enjoy the beautiful 60 degree weather.

While running

Cody was soaking up the rays of light.

That evening I met some friends for dinner and a drink.  Very authentic Italian started off the evening with this:

I drove in to Gastonia to help a family member with some home recommendations.  They are putting their house on the market in a few weeks; we talked about clearing out some extra stuff to make the home appear more luxurious. 🙂 Then it was lunch for my mom’s birthday! 🙂

The snow started to fall (Oh Em Gee!) and I realized I needed to book it back to Charlotte.  It was a long stressful ride back home which included 2 traffic jams and a lot of this:

Driving home -- stuck in traffic -- but isn't it gorgeous!

Once back, I changed clothes and joined Raymond & Cody outside.  It was picture taking time!  Cody was none too happy.

I thoroughly enjoyed our Winter Wonderland.

Raymond and I came in and relaxed the rest of the evening.  I was exhausted and so glad he didn’t go to work.  See, us Southerners aren’t that great at driving in snow and ice. 😉

We took Cody for a walk in the melting snow.  BTW … who on earth wears cowboy boots in the snow?  Bad idea!

Raymond wanted to take some pictures so we had a photographer standoff! 😉

Photographer Face Off

Who’s the better photographer? 😉

I kindly asked Raymond if he would go with me to IKEA.  Their President’s Day Sales were awesome but I really only wanted the GORM shelving unit … and at a $20 discount!

He wasn’t thrilled but said yes … then I asked if he would drive.  Tricky little girl. 🙂

Not thrilled about driving to IKEA.

Not thrilled about driving to IKEA.

I’m not great with crowds … much less anxious bargain crazy crowds.  We were greeted with that exact scene and Raymond went hiding.  I was left to fend for myself against the mob and was successful!  This craziness happened — we had to ride home with the window down.

Hey, I’ve done crazier things in my car. 😉

Craziness at IKEA

Home we came, I put together both GORM’s … reorganized the storage closet … went grocery shopping … put together the LAIVA unit for my bathroom … shopped for baskets for the LAIVA … made dinner … cut my finger … broke an entire $10.99 6-pack of beer at Total Wine with my big badonka booty … and froze like nobody’s business all the while.

So I now ask … what did you do this weekend? 🙂

Until next time…

Girl’s Retreat {Blowing Rock, NC}…

I’m back from the land of the living dead.  That was one mean cold that knocked me out for 2 straight days.  Happy to report that I’m feeling much better. 🙂

I went on a girl’s retreat a few weeks ago with my mom and family.  To say we had a great time is an understatement.  You see, my mom’s family is a unique bunch.  They make you laugh so hard that your abs hurt.  I think they were all born with the funny bone.

Let’s recap the trip shall we…

Who went:

  • Betty
  • Cindy {Betty’s Daughter}
  • Madison {Cindy’s Daughter}
  • Abby {Madison’s friend}
  • Margaret
  • Helene {My mom}
  • Me 🙂

Where did we go:  Blowing Rock & Boone, NC

Why:  Why not? 😉

We started the trip with lunch at Dan’l Boone Inn.  I was starving hence no picture.  The food was delicious.  The restaurant is located in downtown Boone, and they serve each meal family style (aka no ordering from a menu).  Everyone pays the same price and gets a wide variety of meats, sides, and dessert.  My favorite was the Country Style Steak.  Mmm!

My outfit for the day -- less than stylish.

Afterwards, we went to Hawks Nest for some snow tubing   Hawks Nest is a snow tubing only facility located in Seven Devils, NC.  After a twisty ride up the mountain we made it … along with everyone else.  It was a packed house!

I decided to skip the snow tubing in favor of hanging out with Betty in the lodge.  We had the best time talking and chatting.  At the end of the conversation she said, “This better not end up on that blog of yours!” 😉

Mom and I took a quick trip into Boone.  She really wanted to drop by the Mast General Store.  I can always count on mom for some afternoon fun.  We played in the toy section longer than any two adults should. 😉

I should have purchased this, no? :)

Next up was the hotel.. finally!  Holiday Inn Express in Blowing Rock.  The rates were fabulous and the rooms were clean and comfortable!  I highly recommend the hotel!

Dinner time!  Outback Steakhouse — always delicious — always consistent.  Not to mention it was a hop, skip, and a jump from the hotel.  At dinner we all dug into our plates while chatting about whatever came up.

One topic of interest was cruising.  Some of the family had cruised together before.  Others had cruised separate   They all discussed cruising together.  As plans and excitement mounted, Margaret exclaimed, “Let’s go on a singles cruise!”  *silence* .. followed by uncontrollable laughter.

A little later .. this conversation surfaced:

Betty: Jennifer have you ever considered bartering.

Me: Maybe.  Why?

Betty: I was watching this show about these men who barter for goods and services.  They bought 35 chickens and then bartered them for ……

Me: *digging into steak and missing the middle part of the story*

Betty:  ….then they bartered for a car and then an RV.

Me: They bought a car with some chickens?! *uncontrollable laughter*

Day 1 had come to an end.  Day 2 was full of shopping in Blowing Rock.

It was a beautiful cold day!  Our first stop was this adorable quaint shop.  I loved the decor!  Very shabby chic.

What a cute store front!

The rest of the day consisted of shopping, walking, and eating. 🙂

We had a great time!  I’m ready for another Girl’s Retreat. 🙂

Sunday Scavengers…

Today feels like Saturday.  The whole drive home I was thinking:

“I’ll drop by the Colonial Manor in Dallas to see what they have .. especially since they will be closed tomorrow!”

*wonk*wonk* They were closed .. because it is Sunday.

Raymond and I love our Sunday Scavenger adventures! 🙂  This particular adventure happened a few weeks ago. 🙂

We started the day with a trip to Amelie’s French Bakery.  If you have never been, then please note:  It is the coolest coffee shop in Mecklenburg County!

Amelie's Bakery

Up for order:  2 espresso shots, salted caramel brownie, coconut macaroon.

Delicious!  The Salted Caramel Brownie is one of their signature items and it did not disappoint!

Being silly at Amelies. Loved this mirror/picture thing. :)

We were full from all that sugar so we walked across the street to this warehouse looking place.  Half of it was a farmer’s market/produce stand.  The other half was like a junk yard.  It was awesome! 🙂 I can’t remember the actual names ..

Produce Stand & Resale Warehouse

They had some of the coolest vintage furniture!  If I had a garage/warehouse/tool shed, then we would have been in trouble! 🙂

Next up was a trip to NoDa! 🙂  We dropped by this sports bar for a beer.  It was packed … with Cleveland fans.  I’m not a huge football person and definitely felt a little out of my element. 🙂

We had a pretty good time in NoDa but weren’t feeling it completely.  So we headed down the street to Plaza Midwood.  One of my favorite areas and neighborhoods in Charlotte! 🙂

We ate dinner at Loco Lime .. SO good.  Then headed to The Diamond for dessert!  Unbelievable chocolate cake! 🙂

What do you like to do on Sundays? 🙂

{Sunday Scavengers} Downtown Charlotte…

Raymond and I have a weird schedule.  Sunday’s are our days to spend time together.  We especially love that the city is quiet on most Sundays.

Last Sunday was rather dreary.  Instead of bumming around the apartment all day, we decided to head uptown.

To start, we had some Starbucks and hung out with some horses. 🙂 The band-aid is from the attack of the scissors.  The scissors won. :/

Next up was a tour of The Foundation of the Carolinas.  They had an open house going on and Raymond loves art galleries.  I went a few months prior for an art lecture on Chuck Close.  It was apparent that I knew nothing about art, and my wonderful friend knew her fair share (Hi Leticia 🙂 ).

There was a living wall on the 4th floor terrace.  It was pretty darn cool and we took the opportunity to grab a few photos.  😉

Next on the agenda was dinner!  I was STARVING.  If you don’t feed this girl when she’s hungry, then things will get ugly .. fast. 😉

Dinner destination:  Fleming’s Steakhouse.  Tyler, the bartender, always takes great care of us.  And the bar food special ain’t half bad.  5 for $6 until 7pm.  It was delish!  Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, Sweet Chili Calamari, Tenderloin Carparccio, Wicked Cajun BBQ Shrimp.  The carparccio is one of my favorite dishes but that wicked cajun shrimp was out of this world!

Fleming’s Steakhouse of Charlotte

After dinner we took a stroll to the Westin Hotel.  Raymond wanted to check out the bar.  It was such a cool place!  I really wanted to sit outside by the firepit but it was vetoed for a spot at the bar for football. *wonk*wonk* 😉 I drooled over the menu.  It’s a must try for the next scavenger trip!

The Westin Hotel Ember Grille

Next up was a play date in the park. Radcliffe On The Greene … or the park is called The Green.

The Green park in Downtown Charlotte

Last stop was RiRa Irish Pub.  They have awesome live Irish music on Sunday evenings.  I was getting tired and decided to order coffee. 😉 Their Halloween decor was something to see. 🙂

RiRa Irish Pub

I will leave you with my favorite picture of the evening.  I think it is apparent that we had a great time exploring the beautiful Queen City! 🙂

Until next time…

The Fresh Market…

The Fresh Market is … an upscale Trader Joe’s   And if you know my love for TJ’s, then you can suspect that I fell in love with this place!

I decided to take Raymond to lunch one day last week.  A little Indian restaurant located in Huntersville/Cornelius.  He had never eat Indian, and I was in the mood for it … for some reason.  Sangam (that’s the place) has a wonderful lunch buffet.  We stuffed ourselves silly of curry and the like.  Afterwards we needed a walking break, so we popped over to The Fresh Market.

It was love at first sight.  Seriously.

Enjoying their coffee samples. 🙂

Who wouldn’t love a store that is so .. cool!

Their wine selection was awesome!

That’s a mirror. Say “Cheese”! 😉

They had pumpkin everything.  I plan to go back before they sell out.  Pumpkin cream cheese.  Yes please.  Pumpkin Coffee.  Absolutely.  Pumpkin Snack Mix.  Okay! 😉

All of my favorite things!

Raymond is out of town this week spending some time with his brother in Chapel Hill.  Apparently there is a Fresh Market beside their hotel.  He has enjoyed breakfast and lunch from there everyday.  Excuse me — what about moi?! 😉

I’m thinking about grabbing a few things from there for Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers.  Speaking of — isn’t that just around the corner? 🙂

What are you favorite boutique stores?

Until next time…

Soul Gastrolounge…

I went to dinner with a friend of mine last weekend.  She gave me the option of Soul Gastrolounge or Loco Lime.  Both are in Plaza Midwood (aka my favorite neighborhood), and I always go to Loco LIme with Raymond.  So I decided to try Soul! 🙂

I had been twice before but really only to have a cocktail and an appetizer.  That’s not trying a restaurant and their menu.

Be sure to wave back!

The place was hoppin’!  We waited about 30 minutes for a patio table to open up .. never did. Darn fall like day and all those patio hoggers! 😉

Drink time!  Amanda ordered wine; I went with beer.  Newcastle to be exact. It was delish!

Food.  What to order.  Sushi?  Tapas?  An entree all to myself?  We decided to round up several items and give it a whirl!

Our dinner!

Midwood Mixed Green salad for me — oh so yummy!

Fried Meatballs, Hummus of the day, Sashimi Tuna Tacos, and Saganaki.

Good grief!  It is hard to say what my favorite was.  LOVED the Fried Meatballs — they had so much flavor!  LOVED the Sashimi Tuna Tacos.  But that Saganaki was out of this world!  I’ve never experienced anything like that … ever!

Saganaki – Soul Gastrolounge

According to the menu, Saganaki is: pan-fried kefalograviera cheese flamed with brandy.  It was amazing!  Unbelievable!  Tasty!

Can you tell I plan to order that again?! 🙂

If you are in the Plaza Midwood area and want a different take on food and atmosphere, then go to Soul Gastrolounge!  And call me if you want company! 😉
