How Was Your Weekend?

What a weekend!  If you lived in or near the Charlotte area, then you know what I’m talking about! 🙂

NOTE: Besides a recap of the weekend, this post will be a slight phone dump of pictures I took each day.  My new love Instagram did not disappoint. 😉

Friday:

Cody & I went for a quick run to enjoy the beautiful 60 degree weather.

While running

Cody was soaking up the rays of light.

That evening I met some friends for dinner and a drink.  Very authentic Italian started off the evening with this:

Saturday:

I drove in to Gastonia to help a family member with some home recommendations.  They are putting their house on the market in a few weeks; we talked about clearing out some extra stuff to make the home appear more luxurious. 🙂 Then it was lunch for my mom’s birthday! 🙂

The snow started to fall (Oh Em Gee!) and I realized I needed to book it back to Charlotte.  It was a long stressful ride back home which included 2 traffic jams and a lot of this:

Once back, I changed clothes and joined Raymond & Cody outside.  It was picture taking time!  Cody was none too happy.

I thoroughly enjoyed our Winter Wonderland.

Raymond and I came in and relaxed the rest of the evening.  I was exhausted and so glad he didn’t go to work.  See, us Southerners aren’t that great at driving in snow and ice. 😉

Sunday:

We took Cody for a walk in the melting snow.  BTW … who on earth wears cowboy boots in the snow?  Bad idea!

Raymond wanted to take some pictures so we had a photographer standoff! 😉

Photographer Face Off

Who’s the better photographer? 😉

I kindly asked Raymond if he would go with me to IKEA.  Their President’s Day Sales were awesome but I really only wanted the GORM shelving unit … and at a $20 discount!

He wasn’t thrilled but said yes … then I asked if he would drive.  Tricky little girl. 🙂

Not thrilled about driving to IKEA.

Not thrilled about driving to IKEA.

I’m not great with crowds … much less anxious bargain crazy crowds.  We were greeted with that exact scene and Raymond went hiding.  I was left to fend for myself against the mob and was successful!  This craziness happened — we had to ride home with the window down.

Hey, I’ve done crazier things in my car. 😉

Craziness at IKEA

Home we came, I put together both GORM’s … reorganized the storage closet … went grocery shopping … put together the LAIVA unit for my bathroom … shopped for baskets for the LAIVA … made dinner … cut my finger … broke an entire $10.99 6-pack of beer at Total Wine with my big badonka booty … and froze like nobody’s business all the while.

So I now ask … what did you do this weekend? 🙂

Until next time…

Turning the big 3-0…

Forewarning: this is a long post.  Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy!

I’ve said it before and I will say it again.  I. Love. My. Birthday.  It is my favorite day out of every year.  Okay that might be an exaggeration but I love my birthday.  Always have.

My dad jokes that I have the Stanley Burnham gene in me.  My grandpaw turned 70-something this year.  He loves his birthday as much as a 4 year old kid.  And so do I.  No shame in my game! 😉

I have to agree with this post that turning 30 is something that everyone has an opinion about.  My opinion?  Bring on the 30’s!  My 20’s were a fairly typical laundry list of do’s and dont’s.  I think your 20’s are for finding yourself.  For exploring.  For understanding what life is about .. and can be about.   I’m ready for more exploring and more challenges in the 30’s.  I might be a little nervous about aging gracefully which is why I wear Mary Kay, workout, and drink water (see this post about January’s resolutions)!

Before going on to what I did for my birthday this year, I thought I would share these:

The Minimalists {30 Life Lessons From 30 years}

  • My favorite is #3:  Happiness is not for sale in any store.
  • #4 is also a favorite.  Success means something different to everyone.  Define what it means to you.  Is it money?  Is it happiness?  Is it love?  Is it the zest for life?
  • Don’t skip over #8 either! .. goodness the whole list is awesome!

Forbes {I’m Excited About Turning 30, And Here’s Why}

Great quote from that post:

“To me, the more experiences we accumulate, the greater clarity we can have about the life we really want to live. If each day, we take just one bold step towards what we truly want, eventually it is possible to create the life of our dreams.”

Agreed!

Okay — so what did I do for my birthday?  Well I had big plans for Saturday like hot yoga at 8am, estate sale afterwards, shopping for the Charlotte Today show appearance, picking up my birthday cupcakes, then dinner with Mom & Dad.  The first 2 did not happen.  Oh well 😉

The cupcakes from House of Madison were delish!  I’m still eating them.  Not exactly in line with my January resolution. :/  I met my parents at Mac’s Speed Shop in Lake Norman for a low key birthday dinner.  I had never been.  It was very cool, but I’m not sure I will go back for anything other than the mac n cheese.  Afterwards was a trip back to the apartment for some surprise birthday cake from Jenn’s Sugarlicious Bakery.  Yes that is right.  I had a dozen cupcakes and a large 3 layer cake to enjoy.  Yep January Resolution is moving farther and farther away. 😛

Sunday was my birthday and I wanted to do something different.  Raymond and I love our Sunday Scavenger hunts but this time we decided to head up to Chapel Hill & Carrboro.

The weather was perfect for a day out!  70+ degrees — I wore flip flops!  Super fun day full of walking and exploring.  Slight foodie tour and plenty of pictures.  I was exhausted when we got home.

Monday rounded out the weekend of fun with my Charlotte Today show appearance.  I was a little nervous about Live TV.  My 3M videos were filmed with “help” (aka a script and several takes).  I had a great time and hope to do more appearances! 😉

I returned to the land of the living yesterday and had a slight meltdown.  Piles and piles of laundry, dirty dishes, and to-do lists.  Welcome back Jennifer. 😉

What is your opinion on turning the big 3-0?

How To Plan A Birthday Party {Adult style}…

We {insert: society} can get engrossed with planning children’s birthday parties.  So much so that we tend to forget all about our birthday {or friends, spouse, parents, etc}.  Well, I think we all secretly love our birthdays.  It is no secret that I absolutely LOVE my birthday. 🙂

I hope this post inspires you to plan your own birthday shindig or just as fabulous of one for your friends or spouse.  😉

HOW TO PLAN A BIRTHDAY PARTY {ADULT STYLE}

  • Mail invitations.  Yes – MAIL THEM! 🙂  I love receiving cute invitations in the mail!  We are a little too techie these days.  Lets take it back old school style with snail mail!
  • Add a childhood photo of the guest of honor to the invitation.  This might take some secret digging if you are planning for someone other than yourself.
  • Ask guests to RSVP (duh)….with a song that reminds them of the person you will be toasting.
    • Example: If said party was for me, all my friends would reply with “______”.  Go ahead ladies, leave it in the replies.  Lets see if Im right! 😉
    • The songs will become the party playlist.
  • Have a cake made or catered for the event.  Not a sheet cake people! Go to a local bakery and find out what their specialty is.
  • Serve a signature cocktail.  My personal faves: sangria and/or champagne.  Find out if there is a special drink that your guest of honor prefers.  Make that!
    • Set up a cocktail area.  No Solo cups!  This is adult style, not cheap.  😉
  • Add some flowers and balloons.  Keep it simple with a color scheme.  Blue, Yellow, Cream.    Pink, Black, White.   Turquoise, Coral, Cream.  You get what Im sayin…
  • Say cheese.  Photo booths are SO much fun!  Either (A) hire a local photographer or (B) set up a booth on your own.  I prefer the photographer route. 🙂
    • If you do it yourself… Gather a few playful props, tri-pod, camera, and lightweight bedspread or sheet to use as a backdrop.
    • Two photographers that I :
  • Serve some delicious food.  I like “shower style” food.  It looks pretty and (if done right) is very yummy!
  • Gifts:  Im a fan of leaving the gifts at the store, and gift a “fun time”.  Memories are worth far more than any sweater or gift card. 🙂
  • Have a good time! 🙂
Drop a line with your fave party ideas!
Until next time…
